What Is Window Brick Mould?

What Is Window Brick Mould? thumbnail
Window moulds add the finishing touch to the exterior facade.

A window is installed inside a metal or wood frame built into a wall. Where the frame and the exterior siding meet there is a slight gap between the materials. To cover this gap and give the exterior of the window a finished look, a brick mould is attached. Brick mould is typically made of wood, wood composite, aluminum or PVC and received its name because brick was once the most common exterior facade or facing. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Wood

Traditionally, brick mould was made of wood. Wood is a good insulator against heat and cold and can be easily painted. Its main drawback is that over time exposure to water and sun can cause it to rot and crack. In times past the mould was made of hard woods that lasted many years but, because of today's cost of lumber, almost all are made from softer woods that do not stand up to the elements as well.

    Wood Composite

    • Wood composite moulds are made of a sawdust and glue composition covered with PVC. The advantages are that they insulate well, do not rot and provide a durable exterior against the weather. The drawbacks are that they tend to split when nailed, so you should pre-drill the nail holes.

    Aluminum

    • All aluminum moulds are shaped aluminum and provide a long-lasting alternative. They don't accept paint very well and because aluminum is not a good insulator, they do not provide much protection from the outside temperature. All-aluminum moulds are usually only used in warmer climates.

    PVC

    • Plastic moulding never needs painting.

All PVC moulds are lightweight and easy to cut. Like aluminum, they are a long-lasting alternative to wood. PVC has a similar disadvantage as aluminum in that it does not take paint well. However, most come in a variety of colors to more easily match your home's windows and trim.
