Convert the small space above a refrigerator into an efficient nook with cabinetry to increase your kitchen's storage space. In determining what type of cabinets to install above the refrigerator, think about what you intend to use the space for. This is a functional space to store dried foods or kitchen items, such as dishes, trays and crockery that are not intended for everyday use.
Look to how you want to use your cabinets to determine their style. If you plan to store decorative items, choose cabinets without doors or with glass doors to make it a showcase. For food and general storage, install cabinet doors on the cabinets to conceal what is inside of them. To display a decorative dish set or an artistic kitchen collection, install a cabinet solution without doors to show what's inside.
Food Storage Consideration
Since the refrigerator generates a low amount of heat when in use, think about the types of food products suitable for storage above it. Short-term food products, such as cereals, pastas and tomato sauce jars can be stored in these warm cabinets. Canned goods and perishables, such as breads and pastries will have a shorter shelf life if stored in the cabinets.
Blending With Existing Cabinets
Coordinate the design of the cabinets above the refrigerator with the rest of the kitchen's cabinetry. The cabinets work well when they blend in seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen cabinets.
A more complex design is to select a cabinet piece that contrasts the existing cabinetry but in a stylish, attention-grabbing way. The solution may be more ornate than the rest of the cabinetry, carrying with it some of the ornate features of the kitchen's focal point element. For example, if the kitchen has a decorative island that stands out from the rest of the kitchen, use some of the same decorative features in the cabinet above the refrigerator to give it an unusual character and to add an individualized twist to the kitchen's design. As the eye travels around the room, it will connect the interest of that cabinet with the design interest of the island.
If you install pocket cabinetry lighting, the decorative yet functional kitchen pieces on display will only accent the kitchen's decor with style and character. This lighting feature can be left on to give the kitchen a touch of ambiance once the other lights are turned off.
