You must pour concrete floors properly and let them cure or they will eventually develop cracks or chipping. If you have a floor that is damaged, you can redo the concrete with a self-leveling overlay to get a new surface. The self-leveling material fills the space and levels out without the need for spreading it with a trowel. The material also seeps down into cracks and fills them.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic drop cloths
- Painter's tape
- Wood framing
- Self-leveling mix
Mop the floor with soapy water to get rid of dust and dirt. Let the surface dry out; this usually takes one or two days.
Mark a wall to indicate how much material you want to pour on the floor to fix it. You only need to add 1/8 inch of overlay to cover up the old surface. If you do not want to greatly change the height of the floor, it is best to stay between 1/8 and 1/4 inches.
Fill four 5-gallon buckets with the dry mix of the self-leveling overlay. In addition, have the measuring containers for more mix on hand so that you can quickly scoop out the right proportions when you need more. The self-leveling cement dries quickly, so you need to work fast.
Cover the walls with plastic drop cloth. Tape the material to the walls with painter's tape.
Get three people to help you with the project. Two can pour the buckets of overlay and one can add new mix to empty buckets. You can stir the mix with the drill mixer.
Mix the first four buckets of overlay with water. Let one person start pouring and have the other wait until he is finished. The next person can start pouring as the first brings his bucket back to get another one.
Finish pouring the overlay. Stop when it gets to your mark on the wall.
Let the surface of the floor set up for two days.
