How to Replace or Reface Vinyl Kitchen Cabinet Doors

The process of refacing kitchen cabinets often requires the replacement of the kitchen cabinet doors. Many kitchen doors are now made of vinyl or composite materials. These doors still attach to the cabinets with hinges. In most cases, you will have two separate sets of hinges per door. Refacing cabinets is a good way to provide a modern look without incurring the cost of completely replacing the cabinet structures.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Screwdriver
  • Knob
  • Measure the length and width of the original doors with a tape measure to ensure you purchase replacement doors that will fit over the cabinet openings. Take these measurements to the retail center when you go to purchase the doors.

  • Open the old cabinet doors and remove the screws that secure the doors to the hinges.

  • Center the new door over the hinges and mark each mounting hole location from the hinge onto the door.

  • Drill small pilot holes that extend approximately halfway through the new door with a drill bit that measures half the diameter of the screws you will use to mount the doors.

  • Place the new doors back over the hinges, and secure the doors to the hinges with the original screws and a screwdriver.

  • Place the knob or handle for the new door over the hole or holes drilled in the face of the door, and secure the knob or handle with the supplied screws and a screwdriver.
