How to Nail Floor Sheeting to Subfloors

Floor sheeting or underlayment is an important part of any flooring installation. Hardwood floors, vinyl and ceramic tile all benefit from a proper sheeting installation. The sheeting provides a smooth base for the flooring material. It is installed over the subfloor with nails. The nails are hammered around the perimeter of each panel of sheeting and throughout the sheeting into the sub floor. Make sure that the plywood sheeting is laid flat against the sub floor. It is important that the edges of the sheeting that meet up against the walls have a 1/4-inch space. Check the spacing with a tape measure. This will allow for the sheeting to expand and contract.

    • 2

Hammer 1 1/4-inch underlay nails around the perimeter of each panel of sheeting into the sub floor. Space the nails approximately 2 inches apart.

    • 3

Draw a chalk line across room from wall to wall every 4 inches and snap it to transfer a 4-inch grid onto the sheeting. Hammer finish nails at each intersection point to fasten the sheeting to the sub floor.

Set the nails slightly below the surface with a nail set. Center the nail set on the head of the nail and tap it lightly. The nail heads should be just below the surface. You will be able to hammer many nails to this depth, however, some may require a nail set to avoid denting the surface of the sheeting.
