How to Replace a Door Window in a 1996 Freightliner

A Freightliner tractor has a window in each door that you can open or close with the push of a button. While the windows should certainly last the life of the truck, unforeseen circumstances can require you to replace one or both of them. Most auto-glass repair shops will install a new window for you for a fee. However, you can save that labor charge by installing the window yourself if you're mechanically inclined.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx sockets
  • Socket set
  • Trim tool
  • Remove the Torx head screws from the door panel perimeter, trailing edge and bottom using the Torx sockets and socket wrench.

  • Pry the trim covers off the door panel using the trim tool. Remove the Torx head screws under the trim covers with the Torx sockets and socket wrench.

  • Pry the door panel off the door using the trim tool. Pull the panel off the door by hand to expose the access holes.

  • Reach into the door through the access holes with the socket set and unbolt the window from the window regulator.

  • Lift the window up into the window frame by hand. Tilt the window forward and then pull it up and out of the door through the outside of the window frame. Set the old window down somewhere it won't get broken.

  • Slide the front-lower edge of the new window into the Freightliner's door in the reverse manner you removed the old window. Orient the new window in the window frame so the bottom of the window is horizontal. Slide the window carefully down to the window regulator.

  • Bolt the new window to the Freightliner's window regulator using the socket set. Reinstall the Freightliner's door panel by reversing the method used to uninstall it.
