How to Cover a Non Removable Chair Cushion

If a chair seat you want to recover has a cushion that sits on a wood or metal frame and cannot be removed, changing the fabric is a simple matter. If the existing cushion and the filling beneath the fabric are in good shape, the new fabric can easily applied right on top of the existing covering. The only reasons for removing the old fabric and padding are serious damage or a pattern or raised texture that will show through the new covering. Strip away the old fabric if necessary.

Things You'll Need

• Fabric
• Scissors
• Staple gun
• Gimp
• Fabric glue
• Batting (padding), if required

Instructions

1. Place the new fabric face up over the cushion, centering the pattern, if any. Place additional batting (padding) beneath the new fabric if necessary.

2. Trim the extra fabric away leaving a 1-inch overlap around the edge of the existing cushion.

3. Use the staple gun to secure the new fabric at the edges of the cushion where it meets the frame and use the scissors to trim off the extra 1- inch of of new fabric.

4. Select a braided upholstery gimp in an appropriate style and color, cut to the proper length. Use the gimp to cover the staples at the edge of the cushion. Secure with fabric glue. Trim off the end, ensuring it is glued securely in place.
