Installing molding along the stairways walls seems daunting because you need to install it at an angle. First, you have to find the slope of your stair, and then use the result to set your saw's miter gauge. You then only have to use the same miter gauge setting for all the cuts you make. These steps allow you to install various types of moldings to the stairways, including crown moldings, kick moldings and baseboards.
Things You'll Need
- T-bevel square
- Miter saw
Hold a level vertically on the skirtboard, which is the wall trim next to the stairs. Adjust the position until the bubble in the level is in the vial, indicating that the level is perfectly vertical.
Hold a T-bevel square on the skirtboard, against the wall next to the level. Place the square's handle on the skirtboard and adjust its blade until it rests against the level.
Place the square on your saw table and adjust the saw's settings so that the square's blade is flush with the saw blade and the square's handle is flat against the saw's miter gauge.
Place the molding on the saw table and cut both ends using the setting you prepared. This ensures that the ends are vertical when you put it on the stairway wall, allowing it to fit snugly with the molding on the lower and upper levels.
Hold the molding on the wall where you will install it. Drill nail holes, then hammer nails through the molding and into the wall to keep the molding in place. Pre-drilling prevents the force of the nails from damaging the molding.
