How to Use a Three Point Box Blade
One of the most useful tractor implements is the box blade. This multi-purpose tool attaches to the back of a tractor's three-point hitch. A box blade breaks up compacted soil, levels uneven ground, or works as ballast for a front implement such as a loader. Learning how to use a box blade has a learning curve. It will take practice to become proficient. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Back the tractor up to the box blade. Raise the three-point hitch high enough to clear the top of the pins on the box blade by pulling the lever to the right of the seat. Once the arms on the three-point hitch are over top of the pins on the box blade, lower the three-point hitch until the arms rest on the pins. Set the parking brake and turn off the engine.

2
Pull the left hand arm of the three-point hitch until it clears the side of the box-blade pin. The arm will slowly crawl down, when the hole in the three point hitch arm and the pin are in line, push the arm onto the pin. Push a cotter pin through the hole in the box blade pin to keep the arm secure. Repeat this step on the other side of the box blade.

3
Place the top arm of the three-point hitch in between the two metal plates on the top of the box blade, until the holes in the box blade and the top arm line up. Insert the pushpin through the holes and push the cotter pin into the pushpin to secure the top arm.

4
Start the engine and raise the box blade off the ground by pulling up on the three-point hitch lever. Set the parking brake and shut off the engine. Tilt the box by twisting the top arm of the three-point hitch. Twist the top arm clockwise to raise the back of the box blade. Twist counter-clockwise to lower the back of the box blade. Adjust until the box blade is level.

5
Start the engine and drive to the area that needs leveling. Adjust the five ripper-shanks that go across the box blade. If the ground is hard and compacted, adjust the ripper-shanks to the lowest position by slightly lifting on the shank and removing the pin, sliding down the shank and sliding the pin back in.
-
6
Adjust the ripper-shanks all the way up if the soil is loose. Lower the box blade all the way down. Drive in a straight line until at the end of the work area. Raise the box blade, turn around beside the area just leveled, lower the box blade and drive in a straight line back. Repeat this process until the work area is complete.
