Installing Cupola Base on Steel Roofing
In the past, cupolas were much more in vogue. They were needed and quite necessary, in fact, for ventilation purposes. Today, however, this has changed. With modern building techniques and technology changes cupolas are mainly used today for decorative pieces to add more character to a house or shed roof. If working at heights and with tools does not faze you, then you should find it relatively easy to install your own cupola and increase the charm of your house or shed. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Level
- Jig Saw
- Screw Driver
- Ladder
- Cupola Kit
- Wood Screws
- "C" Clamp (optional)
- Caulk
- Caulk Gun
- Wooden 2x4 (four)

Nail the edges of two wooden 2x4 pieces together, forming a cross at one edge of the pieces and lay this cross along the roof's peaks. Repeat this with the other two wooden 2x4 pieces as well.

Use a "C" clamp to hold these cross pieces at their current angles. Make sure to draw a vertical line through the center at the base of the cupola.

Cut a 4-to-6 inch opening for ventilation using your jig saw, if desired. The opening must be smaller than the cupola itself. Cuts should only be 2-to-3 inches from each side/edge of the roof.

Level the cupola with a leveling device and then drill holes 2 1/2 to 3 inches from the edges of the base of the cupola. Using wood screws and a screwdriver secure the cupola in place and apply caulking along the edge of the base for final securing.

Tips & Warnings
Do not cut into the rafters or ridge if you choose to create ventilation.
You may need custom extensions for steeper roofs.
