How to Fix Water Drainage Problems

How to Fix Water Drainage Problems thumbnail
Fix water drainage problems with sub-surface perforated field tile.

Drainage problems occur when water collects in low lying areas and waterlogs soil. These problems are severe when the waterlogged soil happens to sit against a home's foundation or basement wall, as the water erodes masonry and eventually seeps into the structure. Fix water drainage problems with perforated field tile. Perforated field tile, also known as agricultural field tile, is actually perforated plastic tubing installed sub-surface that collects and diverts water from waterlogged soil. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the low lying area where water is collecting and an area for a drain field where water may be harmlessly diverted.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the problem area to the intended drain field with a tape measure and calculate the number of feet of perforated field tile needed to reach from the problem area to the drain field. Buy the necessary field tile and couplings.

    • 3

Dig a trench 2 to 3 feet deep beginning at the low lying spot where water collects and ending at the drain field. Make the drain field end a little lower to help water in the tile run toward the drain field. If the problem low spot is near a structure, ensure the trench is at least 3 feet out from the structure's foundation or basement wall.

    • 4

Lay the perforated field tile at the bottom of the trench, starting at the drainage problem and ending at the drain field. Join lengths with plastic couplings or shorten with a standard hack saw.

    • 5

Cover the entire length of tile with gravel and spread gravel over the water collection area to create the drain field.

    • 6

Cut landscaping fabric with scissors and place it over the entire length of gravel to screen top soil from clogging the field tile's perforations.

    • 7

      Fill the trench with soil.
