It only takes getting locked out once before homeowners decide to look for safe places they can hide an extra key outdoors. There are many products that you can purchase that will hide the key but you can make a container yourself with items you already have around the house. The most important aspect of hiding a key outdoors is not what you hide the key in, but where you hide it so that it does not seem out of place in the yard.
Things You'll Need
- Empty pill bottle
- Industrial strength glue
- Garden spade
Locate an empty pill bottle that is large enough to hold the key that you want to hide outdoors. Rinse out the inside of the pill bottle with water to remove all medication residue and then dry it well with a towel.
Go outside and locate a rock that has at least one flat side that is approximately the same size as the cap of the pill bottle.
Place the pill bottle cap on a flat surface with the top of the cap facing upward. Apply 1 tsp. of waterproof industrial glue to the center top of the cap.
Place the flat side of the rock on the glue and press down firmly. Allow the glue to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
Insert the key into the pill bottle and place the cap with the rock back on the bottle until it is secure.
Go outside and look for a location where there are similar rocks, or a location where the rock on the cap will not look out of place.
Dig a 3 to 4-inch deep hole in the chosen area with a garden spade. Insert the pill bottle into the hole so that the cap is just slightly under the surface of the soil.
Fill in the hole with soil and mound the soil up around the edges of the rock so that no part of the pill bottle cap is visible.
Place similar rocks in the same area as the pill bottle so that it does not seem out of place.
Tips & Warnings
- Most people hide keys near the door, which is too obvious. Instead, look for locations that are at least 15 feet away from the door or on the opposite side of the yard.
- Choose a location that is not covered in ice and large amounts of snow in the winter months.
