How to Recover Deleted Files in Vista 64

Find an index.dat reader to install onto your computer by following one of the links in the "Resources" section. Follow the reader's installation wizard to complete the installation process.

Click “Start.” Click “Control Panel.” Click “Folder Options.” Click the “View” tab. Click “Show hidden files and folders” located beneath the “Hidden files and folders” label. Delete the check marks by clicking the boxes next to “Hide extensions for known file types” and “Hide important operating system files.” Click “Apply” and then “OK.”

Click “Start” again. Type the term “index.dat” into the search bar and press the “Enter” key. Your Vista 64 searches for the index.dat file. When it’s done, the search results are displayed in a search results window.

Right-click the index.dat file and select “Open With.” Go to and click on “Browse” and then locate and click on your index.dat reader to open the index.dat file within it. Scroll through the index.dat file to find the files you want to recover. Click to select the file you want and click the “Restore” button of the index.dat reader to restore it.

Tips & Warnings
Recover more that one deleted file in Vista 64 by holding down the control (Ctrl) key as you click on the files you want to recover before clicking the “Restore” button.
If the Vista 64 computer’s index.dat file has been cleaned, you will not be able to recover the deleted files.
