How to Make a Bedroom Door

A bedroom door does not have to be made of solid wood to give the room's occupant a feeling of privacy. Strands of beads can make a decorative door for your child's or your own bedroom. Use the bead strands alone or add a blanket to protect against drafts and for more privacy. The materials are relatively inexpensive, and the process takes only about one to two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 20 to 30 1/2-inch C-hooks with screw bottom
  • 20 to 30 lengths of bead wire, approximately 6 feet long
  • Scissors
  • 20 to 30 boxes of beads (the number needed will vary based on bead size)
  • Blanket
  • Needle (optional)
  • Thread (optional)

Doorway Preparation

  • Measure the top inside of the doorway and evenly screw in the C-hooks so that the openings are facing one direction.

  • Measure from the top inside of the doorway to about an inch or so above the floor. Cut the bead wires to this measurement with scissors.

  • Knot the end of each wire and string the beads in any pattern you like. When you are finished stringing the beads, knot the top of the wire and form a loop at the top.

  • Hang each bead strand on a C-hook in the doorway.

Blanket Preparation

  • Use the measurements you took in Section 1 to size the blanket. You can either cut the blanket or hem it to fit.

  • If using a blanket with fringe in evenly spaced intervals, tie the fringe together and hang the knots from the C-hooks.

  • If the blanket does not have fringe, cut small, evenly spaced holes and hang the blanket on the C-hooks.

  • To create an option for keeping the blanket and bead door open, screw another C-hook into the one side of the door frame. String a shorter bead wire with beads, attach it to the C-hook and loop it around the beads and blanket to hold them to one side.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bead wire may be a little more expensive than elastic cord, but it is more durable and your bead strands will not break.
