How to Clean a Carpet in an Apartment

Save

Keeping your home clean and fresh can be a full time job. Children, pets and adults track in dirt, mud and other debris that will make your carpet grimy. A stained and dingy carpet can affect the whole look of the room. If not cleaned, the dirt will be ground into the fibers of the carpet making removal more difficult. Before beginning the cleaning process, remove all furniture and other items off the carpet.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum
  • Water
  • 5-Gallon bucket
  • Mild dishwashing liquid
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Whisk
  • Scrub brush
  • Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove surface dirt.

  • Pour 1 pint of warm water in a 5-gallon bucket. Add ¼ cup of a mild dishwashing liquid and 1 tbsp. of distilled white vinegar.

  • Whisk the contents together to form a stiff foam.

  • Dip a scrub brush in the mixture.

  • Scrub the carpet with the scrub brush. Start at one corner of the room and work in small sections at a time. Work the foam mixture into the carpet with a circular motion.

  • Allow the carpet to air dry. When the carpet is completely dry, vacuum it to remove residue from the foam mixture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Point fans in the direction of the carpet to aid in the drying process.
  • Consider renting a carpet shampooer from your local home improvement store. Read all directions and follow all warnings when working with a carpet shampooer.
  • Test the carpet cleaner mixture on an inconspicuous area. If damage occurs, discontinue use.
