DIY Changing Table

DIY Changing Tablethumbnail
A diaper changing table is easy to make.

Considering the number of diapers used during a baby's first year, a dedicated space to change the baby is highly desirable in the nursery. Baby changing tables can be easily made from sturdy tables, shelves and dressers. Outfitting the changing table with a changing pad with contoured edges and a restraining belt, and making certain the table you use is smooth and has some room for storage are some of the major considerations in making your own changing table.

    Things You'll Need

    • Table, shelves or dresser
    • Changing pad with contoured edges and a restraining belt
      • 1

Find a dresser, table or case of shelves that is sturdy and smooth, with no splinters. Choose one about waist high or 36 to 43 inches tall, according to Consumer Reports. A short, fat dresser is more stable than a tall, thin one. If you want to use a taller dresser, anchor it to the wall with furniture straps for added safety. Also look for room to store diapers, ointment and cloths in the form of shelves, drawers, or additional surface space for baskets containing supplies.

      • 2

Wipe all the surfaces of your dresser, table or shelves clean with a damp cloth.

      • 3

Attach a contoured changing pad onto the top of the table, dresser or shelves. Follow the manufacturer's directions. These pads often come with two straps or belts which can be fastened to the top of the table to keep the pad from slipping. The pad can then be removed easily when the baby no longer needs the changing table.

Stock your changing table with clean diapers, ointments or creams, and wiping cloths.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Consumer Reports recommends anchoring any potentially unstable furniture to the wall with tip-over straps or restraints, and to keep heavy objects like TVs off dressers.
