How to Measure for a Screen for a Fireplace
Appropriately sized screens are the best defense against fireplace accidents. Flying sparks can pose a fire hazard in the home. Sparks shoot out from burning logs and may ignite furniture or carpets. Screens work by catching these sparks and keeping fireplace flames under control. Choose a screen that fits the decor of your home and ensure that it fits your fireplace properly.

1
Measure the width of the fireplace opening. Measure the widest part if the opening is not rectangular.
-
2
Measure the height of the fireplace opening to the tallest point.
-
3
Measure the distance from the front of the firebox to the opening. The screen should be placed at least 6 inches from the front of the firebox. You will need to purchase a screen that can sit on the hearth if the firebox lies too close to the opening.
-
4
Measure for a smaller screen if it's for aesthetic purposes only and you do not want it to completely cover the fireplace opening. A gas fireplace does not shoot sparks and can have a smaller screen.
-
5
Factor the kind of screen you want into your measurements. A freestanding screen may be larger than the measurements of the fireplace opening. A curtain or pull screen must fit the opening exactly and can be custom made.
