How to Insulate a Garage Ceiling With a Room Above
It is not often necessary to insulate your garage. However, if you have a room above the garage, you will want to insulate the garage ceiling. This will keep the room on top of the garage cool in the warm months and cozy during the cold months. An insulated garage will also make working in the garage a more pleasant experience due to the regulated temperatures. Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Fiberglass batting insulation
- Ruler
- Utility knife
- Stepladder
- Electric staple gun

Figure out the square footage of the garage ceiling. Find out the width between the ceiling trusses. These measurements will tell you how much insulation you will need to buy and how wide the insulation needs to be. Purchase fiberglass batting insulation that matches the measurements you made.

Cut the insulation to the proper size to fit in your ceiling. Measure out the insulation with a ruler and cut it with a utility knife.

Install the insulation. Stand on a stepladder under the ceiling at one end of the garage. This will allow you to reach the ceiling as you install the insulation. Hold a piece of insulation up to the ceiling of the garage. The paper backing should be facing you.

Staple the batting insulation to the inside of the ceiling trusses. Press in staples along the edges of the insulation.

Install the rest of the insulation in the same manner. Move the stepladder around the garage with you as you install the rest of the insulation.

Tips & Warnings
Wear a dust mask so that you don't inhale small fiberglass insulation particles.
Wear safety goggles while installing the insulation to protect your eyes.
