  • Masonry bit
  • 1½-inch masonry screws

      Insert a masonry bit into your drill. Refer to the drill manufacturer's instructions to determine which size bit to use for your screws. Tom Silva of thisoldhouse.com recommends using 1½-inch masonry screws.

      Drill a hole directly into one of the bricks and then blow away any dust. Do not drill into the mortar. Silva suggests making the hole ¼ to ½ inch deeper than the screw.

      Replace the drill bit with your masonry screw. Reverse the settings on your drill and insert the screw into the pilot hole in the brick. Leave enough of the screw showing to hold your item.
