How to Install a Threshold From Laminate to Carpet
Laying laminated flooring is a popular installation project for homeowners; the tough surface and easy maintenance make it a durable choice for many lifestyles. Many handy homeowners will find themselves stymied when it comes to installing the finishing touches to a laminate flooring job. Installing a threshold from laminate to carpet is a typical problem that the home handyman will encounter. There is a specific transition piece product designed specifically for this floor finishing issue.

Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- 3/4 by3/4 inch scrap of lumber, 1 inch shorter than the length of carpet edge
- Finishing nails
- Hammer
- Laminate flooring carpet transition piece
- Hacksaw
- Screwdriver
- Miter saw

Measure one and 1/2 inches from the finished edge of the carpet; draw a line at this measurement. This is where your laminate flooring will end.

Lay the laminate underlayment foam, overlapping the line by 3/4 of an inch. This will leave another 3/4 of an inch of subfloor visible.

Tack a 3/4 by 3/4 inch strip of wood into the space between the carpet and the laminate ending line, using finishing nails and leaving 1/8 inch of space between the line and the side of the wood. Do not hammer the nails flush with the wood; leave enough head for easy removal.

Finish the flooring installation, using the thin edge of laminate flooring spacers to ensure the flooring ends 1/8 inch from the edge of the wood. This will place the edge of the laminate at the line drawn on the subfloor.

Remove the strip of wood and the spacers, taking care not to shift the final row of laminate.

Cut the metal track of the laminate flooring carpet transition strip to the exact length of the carpet and laminate edge.

Install the track onto the floor, placing it on top of the underlayment and taking care to leave 1/4 inch of expansion space between the metal track and the edge of the laminate. Secure in place with the screws provided with the transition piece.

Cut the laminated carpet transition piece, using a miter saw. Ensure the piece is the exact length of the carpet and laminate flooring edge.

Place the left edge of the laminated carpet transition strip into the left edge of the track. Press the strip gently into place along the length of the transition piece until it is installed tightly against the subfloor.

Tips & Warnings
If you are installing laminate onto concrete you will need to drill holes for the track and use the concrete installation plugs provided with the transition piece.
