How to Soften Water With Baking Soda & Lemon Juice

Save

As using cleansers that are safe for the environment becomes a mounting concern, we are turning more toward tried and true folk methods. Baking soda is a common laundry ingredient and can be used to soften the water as well as the fabric in your wash. Lemon juice adds a nice lemon scent to your clean laundry without the use of harsh perfumes. The acidic properties of lemon juice also can kill bacteria in your dirty laundry and dishwater.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Air-tight container
  • Mix lemon juice and baking soda in the air-tight container.

  • Add warm water, mixing until all the soda is dissolved. This prevents it from clumping up on your clothes.

  • Add to washing machine during the rinse cycle. Close the door and let the wash continue. If you are using a front-end loader, pour the mixture in the fabric softener slot before you start the wash.

Tips & Warnings

  • To use baking soda and lemon in your dishwater, add them directly to the water as you fill the sink. You may have to add more baking soda depending on the hardness level of your water.
