Framing
-
1
Make a list of the different types and sizes of materials listed on the framing plan. When you look at the framing plan, different materials will be listed and labeled.
-
2
Measure the length of materials using your architect scale at the proper scale factor. An architect scale is a three-sided ruler with different scale factors for reading scaled building plans. These scale factors are marked on the ends of the ruler edges. Example: 1/4"=1'-0" would be the scale factor for 1/4 inch equals 1 foot. Make a count of different hardware (fasteners, brackets, etc.).
-
-
3
Add the lengths of material together to find the total length or count of each material needed. You can keep track of this on the materials list sheet. Add only the lengths and types of the same materials.
-
4
Multiply the length by the width of the deck surface to find the total square footage to be covered with decking.
-
5
Call your local home improvement store to quote current unit pricing for the materials you need.
-
6
Multiply the unit cost by the material lengths you calculated earlier. This will most commonly be at a "per foot" unit, and hardware may be "per item."
-
7
Add the cost of materials together to find the total cost estimate of materials for your porch project.
