How to Antique Mirrors

Many people enjoy the look of an antique mirror. However, few can afford the time or the money it takes to find and buy the right antique mirror for them. An easier solution is to make a mirror look antique. Here is a fairly simple process.

  • Paint remover or stripper
  • High-quality spray paint or shellac
  • Spray bottle
  • Clean rag or cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the protective coating on the back of the mirror using the paint remover or stripper. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for protecting yourself from any fumes or protecting your hands from harsh chemicals.

    • 2

If you want a uniform spotted, discolored antique look, use a spray bottle to spray Antique Mirror Patina Solution onto the entire back of the mirror.

    • 3

If you want an asymmetric natural antique look, pour the solution onto a clean cloth or rag and wipe it on the back of the mirror as desired.

    • 4

If you want a dramatic marbled antique look, pour the solution directly onto the back of the mirror. Let it set for at least a few minutes before allowing the excess to drip off. The longer it sets, the more dramatic the effect will be.

    • 5

Give the solution a couple hours to dry and then paint the back of the mirror with shellac or with flat black, green, buff or gold spray paint. Allow to dry to seal the back of the mirror.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stencils can be used to create designs on the mirror. Nitric acid can be used instead of the Antique Mirror Patina Solution, but it is much more dangerous to use and requires a quality respirator and protective clothing.

  • Always read and follow all manufacturer's warnings and instructions for using any paint, paint remover or other chemicals.
