This article is designed to help guide you through a fun project of turning part of your backyard into a relaxing and enjoyable patio. It is recommended to have 2 people assist you in this project.
Things You'll Need
- Large Patio Blocks
- Crushed fill rock
The first step is to go outside and measure the size of the patio that we want to build. Now we need to take the measurements and head to the local landscaping do it yourself store. (ie. Home Depot, Lowes, Menards..) No we need to multiply the length and width by each other to find out our square feet.
Once we get to the store we need to pick out our landscaping tile that we want to lay down. If you want a colorful or patterned look you can purchase multiple colors and add some design to your patio. Once you purchased the tile we need to buy crushed rock for underneath. Talk to your local associate at the store to see how much you need for your square feet. As a rule of thumb I always buy a little more than they suggest. You can always return the unused portion of rock.
Now we need to head on home and start to dig. This is where friends come in hand. Add the depth of your tile and the depth or your crushed rock and dig that deep. After you have dug that out, lay your crushed rock down and rake it level. I use a tile then to pat it down to pack it in better.
Now we need to take out our level and make sure the crushed rock is level. This is a very important step otherwise the tiles will lean to one side or the other. Now lay the patio tiles down in the pattern you want and enjoy. Done right this will provide years of enjoyment and add value to your home!
Tips & Warnings
- If you live in an area with a lot of clay you should lay down fiberglass cloth before laying the crushed rock. This will help the rock not to be sucked into the ground over the years.
