Remodeling your kitchen can be exciting. A new look, feel and function can make the heart of your home even more inviting. Deciding what colors to use often is one of the hardest parts of the process. To get started, consider how the space will be used. Colors play a part in how people feel, so think about the way the kitchen will be used, what kind of reaction you want from guests and about contrasts. Make sure everything flows together well, is pleasing to the eye and functional, and your kitchen remodel will be a success.

How to Choose Colors in a Kitchen Remodel

  1. Step 1

Pick a bright color if your kitchen is used for parties and entertaining. Bright colors, such as yellow and orange, help energize emotions, so these are logical choices if your goal is laughter and having a good. For a contrast, darker cabinets and countertops work best with bright paint.

  2. Step 2

Use calm tones, such as tan, brown or gray, if the kitchen is a place to relax and unwind. If it's the room where the family gathers after a busy day, calm colors will help soothe everyone. The evening meal will be relaxing, and stress will evaporate. Both dark or light cabinets and countertops work well with this option. But if you want the cabinets to be the focal point, go darker; the wood will pop out against the neutral background paint.

  3. Step 3

Choose white, black, navy or cream if you want a kitchen that is minimalist and clean. If you go with white or cream paint, darker cabinet wood is best. If you pick black, navy or another darker color for the walls, white cabinets will provide a cleaner look. Neutral countertops work best for either option in this kitchen remodel scenario.

  4. Step 4

To make a dramatic statement with your kitchen remodel, paint the walls red. This confident color makes the whole room spark. Lighter wood cabinets and neutral counter tops work best with red walls. If you want a vintage look, however, white cabinets and a black-and-white, tile countertop would be the best combination.

  5. Step 5

Install a floor covering that complements the new paint, countertops and cabinets. Hardwood or laminate floors should be a shade or two darker or lighter than cabinets to keep things from blurring together. Tile in cool, gray tones highlights red, navy or black walls. Tan tiles work well with brighter colors, such as yellow and orange, and complement white and cream walls. Brown tiles, or even ones with an orange tint, work well with red if a Tuscan theme is desired.
