How to Clean the Brick on an Indoor Fireplace
Dust, soot and other dirt can make the bricks on your fireplace look dirty and drab. Due to the porous nature of bricks, much of the dirt can be absorbed into them and will not easily wipe away. It will require effort to return the bricks to their former appearance, but it can be done. The more often you clean the bricks on your indoor fireplace, the easier it will be each time since the dirt and soot will not have a chance to build up on the masonry. Does this Spark an idea?

Apply the fireplace cleanser according to package directions. Fireplace cleansers are available at home improvement stores. If a fireplace cleanser cannot be found, you can use powdered laundry detergent dissolved in water.

Scrub the brick thoroughly with a stiff nylon scrub brush. Make sure to scrub the mortar between the bricks, as this often shows dirt and stains the most.

Rinse the cleanser away with clear water. Reapply cleanser to any areas that are still dirty and scrub again.

Tips & Warnings
Spray soot stains immediately with vinegar and wipe off to avoid deep stains that require scrubbing.
Do not clean bricks that are damaged or crumbling.

Try Quick n Brite, you can't buy it at hardware stores but it is far better than anything I have ever bought at a hardware store. It is an all purpose cleaner but is fantastic to remove soot and creosote build up on fireplace brick, making it look like new. It is also non-toxic and biodegradable so it is SAFE! I was about to paint my fireplace because I could not find anything to remove the bad soot build up when a friend introduced me to Quick n Brite, I could not believe the wonderful job it did (and it was easy!) I've been using Quick n Brite ever since on my fireplace to help keep it clean. Love the product.
