Stone fireplace mantles add a rustic sense of ambiance to any room. Unfortunately they are expensive to have constructed and difficult to build if one isn't an experienced stone worker. Faux stone fireplace mantles are the perfect solution when cash and skill are at a minimum. For a fraction of the cost of an actual stone fireplace mantle, you can build your own made from faux stone, and no one will be able to tell the difference.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Assemble the fireplace mantle and surround kit according to manufacturer's instructions. This will involve simple assembly requiring a power drill, screwdriver and level. Locate at least one stud with your stud finder and affix the mantle frame to this with screws and your power drill.
If you are not assembling a new fireplace mantle, but creating your faux stone fireplace mantle from an existing mantle, start by sanding the finish from the existing mantle using a power sander and fine gauge sandpaper.

  2. Step 2

Measure the chicken wire to fit the mantle and surround. Affix to the mantle and surround using a heavy duty power stapler every 10 to 12 inches; using more around the perimeter.

  3. Step 3

Create a pattern on the floor or a flat surface with the faux stone pieces. Measure an area of the floor that meets the dimensions of the fireplace mantle and surround, and assemble the faux stones in a decorative layout.
Prepare mortar mix according to package directions. Spread the mortar with a trowel over the chicken wire, to about 3/4 inch thickness.

  4. Step 4

Place each faux stone on the mantle and surround as you have placed it on the floor. Hold each stone firmly in the mortar for about 30 seconds or until it stays put when you let go. It is often helpful to have a second person to assist with this portion of the job.

  5. Step 5

Allow faux stones and mortar to dry for 12 hours. Apply clear sealant with a paintbrush and allow to dry for 24 hours before using the fireplace.
