For a natural looking birdhouse, try making one from a hollow log. Some birds prefer these over manmade birdhouses. It's an easy project to do. Here's how to turn a hollow log into a birdhouse.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • hollow log
  • wooden dowel
  • wire or chain
  • short boards
  1. Step 1

Find a section of a fallen tree with a hole in it. We found some hollow trees in our woods. Also look through delivered firewood in case there's a section with a hole in it. Make sure the cavity is a reasonable size for a bird's nest. Check how far the cavity extends upward and downward.

  2. Step 2

Cut the log into a short section so it won't be too heavy.

  3. Step 3

Drill a small hole just below the opening in the log. Insert a dowel or stick for the bird to use as a perch. It will land here before hopping into the nesting area. If there's a small branch protruding just below the opening, that can serve as the perch.

  4. Step 4

Nail a section of board across the top and another across the bottom of the log.

  5. Step 5

Attach strong wire or a chain to hang the log from a post or tree. We like hanging them in trees for a more natural setting and to give the bird shade for their nest.

Tips & Warnings
  • Slimmer trees make easier-to-hang birdhouses.
  • Squirrels like these too.
