Missing shingles are unsightly, but more importantly, they allow the elements to cause greater damage to your home. Shingles are necessary to ensure that you do not have a roof leak, which could cause thousands of dollars of damage to your home.
Use roof jacks that can be nailed in place to support a board. This creates a more level standing surface. This is especially important on a roof with a steep pitch.

Pull up the shingles above the missing shingle. Do not pull it so much that it comes free from the roof.

Slide the new shingle under the existing shingles. You can use a bit of roof tar on the back of the new shingle to keep it in place.

Use the nails to secure the new shingle to the roof. If you cannot get it nailed under the existing shingle, you can nail through the existing shingle through to the roof. You will need to tar over the nails in this case.

Tar over any spots where you nailed to secure the roof jacks in place.
Tips & Warnings
It is not necessary to secure the shingle by nailing it at the uppermost spot. As long as the overlapping shingle will cover the nails, it will keep water out.
If you are missing several shingles, it could be a sign of a poor roofing job, and you may want to consider reshingling the whole roof.
