How to Open a Fireplace Vent
A fireplace vent is opened to create a draft for fanning a fire. The draft can be used to help start the logs burning, or to burn them completely and exhaust a fire. The fireplace vent is set below the fireplace doors to create an airflow path into the opening, under the grate and up the chimney. The heat inside fireplaces directs the flow by rising and escaping through the flue. Take advantage of this effect whenever you want to fan a fireplace fire. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Locate the security tab. One of the vent slots will have a 1-inch horizontal oval shape with a brass bead over the left side. The tab will be in the center of most fireplace vents.
-
2
Release the security tab. Pinch the bead between your fingers and turn it slightly clockwise. Use a rag or pot holder if a fire is burning. It should only take a half turn to free the tab.

3
Slide the cover open. Push the tab to the right side of the oval opening. This will slide the metal back panel into a position that lines up its hole pattern with the holes in front to create multiple rows of small openings.

Tips & Warnings
Use caution when opening the security tab to avoid unscrewing it completely. There are only a few threads holding the bead in place. Don't tighten the bead while the vent is open. The heat of the fire will expand the metals and cause the tab to stick. That won't help if you need to shut the vent quickly.
