Refinishing a wood end table is an inexpensive way to make it look like new. Over time, end tables get scratched, stained and blemished. All of these problems can be corrected by sanding off the existing stain and refinishing the table.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electric sander
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint brushes
  • Wood stain
  1. Step 1

Sand the end table with an electric sander to remove the existing finish. Look for any bumps or irregularities in the surface. Sand these down with a coarse grain sandpaper.

  2. Step 2

Sand the table's legs by hand. Be sure to get into all crevices or grooves of the table. The preparation phase is crucial to refinishing wood furniture. The new finish will not adhere to the wood if there is any remaining finish left on the table.

  3. Step 3

Go over the entire table with a medium-fine sandpaper to give it a smooth finish.

  4. Step 4

Use a paint brush to apply a thin coating of wood stain onto the end table. Make sure the stain is applied evenly. Use a small brush to get into the hard to reach crevices, if necessary. Let the stain dry for 24 to 48 hours.

  5. Step 5

Inspect the end table for any spots where excess stain may have pooled. Sand these spots down with fine grain sandpaper.

  6. Step 6

Brush on a second coat of wood stain, making sure to brush it on evenly. Let the end table dry for 72 hours before handling.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure you have adequate ventilation when working with wood stain. It is best to work outside or in an open garage. If you must work inside, open the windows and run a fan to improve airflow.
