Instructions

  1. Building a Wall

    • 1

Pour footings for the wall. The footings should be twice as deep as the thickness of the wall and twice as wide. This will provide a secure foundation to lay the block on.

    • 2

Spread mortar onto the footings with a trowel, about 1-inch deep and 8-inches wide. Cover only about three or four blocks at a time. Use the trowel to make a indentation in the center of the mortar. This will cause the mortar to spread to the sides when the block is laid on it.

    • 3

Start with the corner block. Make sure the corner block is aligned perfectly, because if it's not, all the other blocks will be off.

    • 4

Do this for all the corners, by placing mortar on the footings a few blocks at a time. Use a mason's level to check the tops and edges of the blocks.

    • 5

Build up the corners first. Use the corners as guidelines for the rest of the blocks. If one is not aligned, set it straight immediately.

    • 6

Continue laying blocks this way, and scrap off any excess mortar with the trowel. Throw the excess back onto the mortar board. Make sure to turn the mortar occasionally so it doesn't harden.

Tips & Warnings

  • The back of a wheelbarrow or a piece of plywood makes a great mortar board. Before you start, estimate the number of blocks and mortar you will need so you are well-prepared. Lay out the first row of blocks dry to find out how many you are going to need.

  • Tap all blocks into alignment while the mortar is still wet. Never try to move the blocks after the mortar is dry.
