How to Measure for a New Exterior Door

Draw a simple diagram of the exterior door in question, or take a digital photo, which you can then print. Use the diagram or photo to record the door's measurements.

Measure the width and height of the existing door. Round measurements up to the nearest inch.

Measure the width of the door jamb, from the back side of the interior door trim to the back side of the exterior trim. This measurement will allow you to order a door that sets the interior trim flush against the wall without having to install jamb extensions.

Measure the door opening by removing the interior trim. Measure the width of the opening between the framing pieces and from the bottom to the top of the door opening. These measurements must match the approximate opening requirements for the new door for a perfect fit.

Measure the exterior opening width from the outer sides of the exterior door casing. Measure the height from the bottom of the door sill to the top of the door trim.
