How to make a footstool.
Make a custom footstool to match the decor of your home.
Start with a plastic milk crate that you can usually get from your grocer; or you can purchase them at Walmart's and other retail stores. This will be the base of the footstool.
Use an electric knife if you have one to cut 5 pieces of foam rubber to the exact size of each 4 sides and the top of the crate. If you don't have an electric knife, you can use a serrated knife. Spray one side of the foam with spray adhesive and press to the sides and top of the crate.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A plastic milk crate
  • a piece of wood the size of the top of the milk crate
  • 4 wheels or 4 screw on feet
  • 2" thick foam rubber
  • plastic or fake fur material
  • thread
  • sewing machine
  • spray adhesive
  • drill
  • drill bit 1/8 "
  • screw driver bits
  • screws
  1. Step 1

Turn upside down, and using the 1/8" drill bit, drill a hole in each of the four corners of the bottom of the crate. Attach the pre-cut piece of wood with screws.

  2. Step 2

Measure a side of the crate; this will be the size you need to cut 5 pieces of your material, adding 2 inches on all sides.
Sew east side to top and top to west side. Sew north side to top side and south side to top side. Sew along the side seam of south joining to east on one side and west on the other side; repeat for north; joining north to east and west. You will be sewing in from all edges about 1 1/2 inches. This will allow a little give when you fit it over the foam rubber.

  3. Step 3

Once you have the cover fitted over the stool, using a hot glue gun, apply a cord around the top 4 seams.
Turn the stool upside down, and using a low heat glue gun, turn the material under and glue to the underside of the foam. Or if you prefer, you could hem and just leave it loose, for ease in taking it off for cleaning.

  4. Step 4

Attach 4 wheels to the bottom of the stool if you would like the stool to be movable. If you prefer if to be stationary, screw in four little ball feet. These are so easy to make you may want to make one for every chair in the house. Who knew?

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending on where you want the footstool; you could put a ruffle around the bottom, or a pre-made row of tassels.

on 3/23/2009 Wonderful and clever idea, and if you make the crate up right you can use it for storage by attaching a lid. I love it. *****

on 3/22/2009 Very good instructions and just the project itself seems fun. Kids could make footstools for grandparent gifts. 5*
