How to Make Foam Seat Cushions

Perhaps you have an old set of patio furniture that could use some sprucing up or you need to replace the seat cushion on a favorite chair. Fortunately, making your own foam rubber seat cushions is simple.
You only need basic sewing skills to complete this project. The most important considerations are ensuring that your measurements are correct and that you've chosen a durable fabric that will be appropriate for how much use your chair will get.

• Fabric of your choice (1 to 2 yards) Foam rubber (3 to 4 inches thick works best) Fabric marking pencil Measuring tape Scissors Straight pins Sewing machine Needle and thread Sandpaper

1. Measure the seating space of your chair. Ensure that your foam rubber piece will fit comfortably and trim to size if necessary.

2. Use sandpaper to slightly round the corners of your foam rubber piece.

3. Fold your fabric in half with the right sides together. Lay out flat.

4. Lay your foam rubber piece onto the fabric. Use the fabric marking pencil to trace around the foam rubber. If your foam is 3-inches thick, add 1 1/2-inches all around. If it is 4 inches thick, add 2 1/4-inches all around.

5. Cut out the fabric pieces. Pin these pieces together (right sides still facing each other).

6. Sew along three sides of your fabric, but leave the fourth side open. Turn the cushion cover right sides out.

7. Insert the foam rubber piece into the cushion cover.

8. Use the needle and thread to sew the fourth side closed by hand.

9. Place your new seat cushion in your chair.
