Instructions

    • 1

Get a building permit from your local area. Since the patio roof will attach to the permanent home, a building permit is required.

    • 2

Measure and diagram the area the patio roof will cover. Make a detail of the slope and extension the new roof will make in relation to the existing roof.

    • 3

Dig a hole to pour the footing into (at the end of the concrete slab where the end of the roof will end at). The concrete footing will hold the ends of the roofs' support. It should be 3 feet deep by 8 inches wide.

    • 4

Pour premixed concrete into the hole. At the top, the anchor bolt should be inserted 7 inches deep and held into place until the concrete sets. There should be two of these, one at each end.

    • 5

Place a galvanized column base with a 1-foot support at the top of the concrete footing, separating the support beam for the roof and the concrete.

    • 6

Anchor the support beam, which needs to be treated wood, to the galvanized column base. The support beam will need to be 6 feet 8 inches minimum in height.

    • 7

Take off any laminate or brick veneer at the top under the existing roof.

    • 8

Attach a ledger with lag bolts penetrating the existing top plate or studs.

    • 9

Attach galvanized metal joists or rafter hangers to the ledger.

    • 10

Extend the roof with 2-by-4 boards to new support beams at the end of the concrete slab. Be sure to have a slight slope to allow rain to fall off. Do not allow hang-off for the roof to be any closer than 2 feet from the property edge.

    • 11

Install support beams with galvanized support brackets every 10 to 12 inches.

    • 12

Cover support beams with 3/4-inch-thick treated plywood.

    • 13

Cover with underlayment and extend at least 18 inches from new roof to existing roof.

    • 14

Cover with shingles or roofing material of choice.
