How to Celebrate a Holiday Birthday

How to Celebrate a Holiday Birthday thumbnail
Keep birthdays that fall on the holidays as special as possible!

My birthday falls on the day after New Year's. January 2 has to be one of the most miserable times of year to celebrate a life. The holiday season is over--and any notion of another party or get-together is beyond most people's comprehension. However, it is still my birthday--just like anyone born on December 25 or January 1. One of the most annoying things about a "holiday" birthday is the usual attempt to role everything into one big gift or celebration--and that's why people with birthdays around the holidays often feel looked over. Here are a few tips to help someone have a happy birthday--even if it's during the holiday season. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • A sense of humor
  • A commitment to keep the person's birthday special and separate from the holiday
  • Some well-thought-out advance planning

Instructions

    • 1

Never place a birthday gift under a Christmas tree or present it as a Chanukah gift. Keep the gifts special and distinct.

    • 2

Never use holiday paper to wrap the gift.

    • 3

Always try to arrange, if that is to the person's liking, a special dinner or gathering that is not connected with the holiday.

    • 4

For the most part, keep it simple. The gesture of simply doing something special that is NOT lumped in with the holidays is the best part of any gift you can give.

Tips & Warnings

  • Birthdays are special even if they do occur on or near a holiday.

  • Keep things simple and to the person's taste.

  • Do not use leftover holiday items for birthday items.

My wife has the good or bad fortune (depending on your individual life style) to celebrate her birthday on New Year's Eve. As you said, being a part of the Christmas Holiday Season sometimes lessened the joy of her birthday. Her family, as do we, always remove Christmas decorations from the house before New Year's Eve day. As much as we love Christmas, it is the wiser thing to do. At times, when she was younger, New Year's Eve celebrations were simply a way to have even more fun on her birthday - if she chose to do so she could believe that EVERYBODY was celebrating her. However, as we have aged to well beyond the "over the hill" stage of life, she prefers a much quieter celebration with family only. I, for one, appreciate this approach because we can enjoy not just that one day, but everyday of her life and the wonderful things she and our children have accomplished. As you menti

I have the same birthday as you Richard and can completely relate. It bothered me more as a kid, but as I get older it's not as bad. The other problem is a lot of restaurants, etc. are still closed from New Year's. Plus, if you follow astrology, we're Capricorns and are supposed to be miserable to begin with! Happy Holidays and Happy Birthday in advance.
