How to Keep Glass Fireplace Doors From Breaking

Glass fireplace doors can be a great way to visually enjoy a fire. Fireplace doors in general are also very beneficial for heating your home. The right doors can prolong the life of each fire you light in the fireplace, as well. Whenever you're dealing with anything made of glass, though, it's important to know what measures you have to take in order to keep the glass from breaking. This can save you money as replacement fireplace doors can be expensive.

  • Use only one log for your fire. Fireplaces with glass fireplace doors should house only small to medium-sized fires. If the fire is too big, it will generate that could endanger the integrity of the glass in the fireplace doors. Let the fire burn down most of the way before you add another log.

  • Place a screen in front of your glass fireplace doors. This will help to deflect any particles before they reach your fireplace doors. These particles may not break your doors immediately but they could cause little chips that could in time cause the doors to break.

  • Clean your glass fireplace doors at least once a month. When dirt and soot accumulate on the doors, it causes the doors to absorb more heat than normal. If the glass gets too hot, it may shatter. The dirt and soot itself can also weaken the glass doors, increasing the odds that the doors may break.

  • Keep the crate in the fireplace a safe distance from the glass fireplace doors. This will keep the doors from getting too hot as well as help to prevent any flying particles from making contact with the doors. Your crate should be about six to eight inches away from the glass fireplace doors before you start your fire.

  • Open your glass doors at least part of the way when you start a fire in the fireplace. This is another step you can take to keep your glass doors from overheating. As the fire starts to die down, you can close your doors without worrying about the glass breaking.
