Achieve the look of grass cloth walls with a faux finish technique called "dragging." Whether you're creating an interior design to complement an oriental look, a casual natural feel or an elegant formal setting, utilize the inexpensive process of faux painting. The proper tools will help you achieve this cost-effective and desired finish to your home decor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Primer paint
  • Base coat paint
  • Accent paint
  • Brushes
  • Painter's masking tape
  1. Step 1

Tape all surrounding edges and apply the primer paint. When completely dry, paint the walls with the base coat to prepare for the final accent colors.

  2. Step 2

Select one or two shades of complementary colors of latex paint. Apply over completely dried walls.

  3. Step 3

Use a wallpaper brush to achieve the textured effect of grass cloth. Dip the brush with a light coat of accent color and drag the brush in a vertical downward movement, covering a section from the top to the bottom of the wall.

  4. Step 4

Complete the entire wall and allow it to dry. Repeat the same procedure with paint a shade lighter in the same tone. This will achieve a natural grass cloth look.

  5. Step 5

Use a golden gilt glaze instead of the latex paint, for a more formal dramatic effect.

Tips & Warnings
  • Drag the wallpaper brush horizontally over the vertical brushstrokes to obtain a woven effect.
  • Use slower drying latex paint to allow time to work over mistakes.
