How to Paint Laminate Cabinets

Remodeling can become quite an expensive venture when it includes replacing cabinets. If the cabinets are in good condition, it is not necessary that they be replaced. With a little bit of time and a whole lot less money, they can be transformed into the cabinets you desire.Painting laminate cabinets is not as difficult as it may seem. If done correctly, the new paint can last for many years. Follow these steps to paint laminate cabinets and the finished project will be well worth the time and effort.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Screwdriver
• Sandpaper (100 grit)
• Lint free cloth
• Primer
• Paint brushes
• Clear sealer

1. With the screwdriver, remove all doors from the cabinets. Empty cabinet drawers and also remove them from cabinets. Remove all of the hardware. Clean any dirt and stains from cabinet doors, drawers and bases.

2. Sand all cabinet doors and drawer fronts with 100 grit sandpaper and wipe clean with lint free cloth. Also sand and clean all cabinet bases that are attached to the walls.

3. Paint a coat of primer on all cabinet doors, drawer fronts and bases. If primer did not cover completely, paint on a second coat.

4. Paint the first coat of the colored latex paint of choice. Complete this on all of the doors, drawer fronts and bases making sure to get an even first coat applied. Allow this to dry at least 24 hours.

5. Repeat Step 4 by painting a second coat of the colored latex paint on all the doors, drawer fronts and bases. Again, allow this to dry for at least 24 hours.

6. To protect the new paint, apply a coat of clear sealer to all cabinet doors, drawer fronts and bases. This can be a semi-gloss or high gloss sealer and can be painted or sprayed on. Allow this to dry completely for 24 hours.

7. Replace all of the hardware and install all cabinet doors and drawers back on the base.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not close drawers completely for a few days until paint has completely cured.
• While hardware is removed, it can easily be spray painted with a new finish.
• For a high gloss look, apply several coats of sealer making sure that each layer is completely dry.
