Install Doors

New doors can help make your home look fresh. There are plenty of innovative and simple styles. The best part about getting a new door is how easy it is to install.

Things You'll Need:

  • New door and jam
  • Hammer
  • Screws
  • Paint
  • Putty

    Install a New Door

  1. Step 1

Get the measurements for your new door. If you already have a door, you will want to get a replacement. In general, the opening should be about two inches bigger than the door. This will help to make sure the door jam will fit properly. You may even have to leave more room on the top and bottom, so your door can shut without it touching the floor.

  2. Step 2

Order a prefab door with a split jam from a hardware or millwork store.

  3. Step 3

Leave the door attached to the jam. Your new door will come in two pieces. One side will have the hinges, and the other side is the door jam. These can be attached without having to do any more measurements.

  4. Step 4

Install the door by putting the door jam in place and nailing it to the wall. You will want to put nails in the front and back of the jam.

  5. Step 5

Putty the holes and paint the door and the jam.

  6. Step 6

Wait for the paint to dry. Because the door is already installed, you will be ready to enjoy your work.

Tips & Warnings
  • You only need one person to install the door, but because doors can be heavy, you may want to ask for assistance.
  • It could take up to six hours to install the door, including the time it takes to paint.
