How to Hang a Medicine Cabinet

Hanging a new medicine cabinet is a fairly straightforward process. You want to purchase a medicine cabinet that has strong hinges, one you can hang directly into the studs behind your walls for added security. Once you've made your purchase, follow the steps below to hang the cabinet.

Things You'll Need

  • Medicine cabinet
  • Stud finder
  • Level
  • 3-inch screws
  • Drill
  • Select a medicine cabinet made of wood or plastic so it will age well and not rust. The high humidity level in the bathroom makes this necessary.

  • Use a stud finder to locate the studs behind the walls of your bathroom in the area you want to hang your medicine cabinet. The stud finder reacts to the metal nails in the studs, so you can find them. Mark the studs on the wall with a pencil so you know where they are.

  • Hold the medicine cabinet up to the wall so you can determine where to drill through the back of the cabinet and into the studs. Mark those locations on the interior of the medicine cabinet.

  • Position the medicine cabinet in place and check it to make sure it's level and plum. It needs to be level so the items inside don't spill, and it needs to be plum in order for the door to close properly.

  • Drill through the cabinet and into one stud and check for level and plum again. Reposition the medicine cabinet if necessary, then drill into the second stud.

  • Put in the adjustable shelves that accompany your medicine cabinet.

  • Clean away the fingerprints and smears you made during the installation process.
