Learning to reupholster a wing-back chair is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to give it new life. If you have an old wing-back chair with outdated fabric or it doesn't match your other furniture, taking the time to reupholster a wing-back chair is not a hard as it may seem. It just takes patience and attention to detail to give your chair new life.
Things You'll Need
- 11 yards upholstery fabric
- 1/2-inch thick batting
- Decorative cording for trim
- Needle-nose pliers
- Sharp scissors
- Staple gun
- Glue gun
- Glue sticks
Strip the chair by first removing old staples with the needle-nose pliers. Keep the pieces intact to use as patterns.
Spread the upholstery fabric out on the ground and lay the pieces of the old fabric on top. When you reupholster a wing-back chair, use the old pieces as your pattern and cut out new pieces. Label the pieces to keep track of them all.
Add the 1/2-inch thick batting as padding over the chair to fill in any bare spots.
Start with the back of the chair, draping the fabric over and tucking in the side to pull the fabric through the back of the chair. Hold the fabric tight with one hand as you staple the back top into the wood frame across the back of the chair.
Pull the bottom of the same piece you stapled onto the back through the chair tightly and staple it to the upper wood bar across the back of the chair. Pull the sides of the fabric through the back of the chair very tightly, and then staple them to the wood bar frame.
Install your fabric over the front and the "wings" of the wing-back chair. Tuck them in and staple the fabric to the wood.
Continue to add the remaining pieces of fabric to the wing-back chair remembering to keep it pulled taut and tuck it securely before stapling it into place. Finish your reupholster project by adding the cording with fabric glue along the seams of the wing chair.
