To make a fence gate is easy when you use a fence panel from the existing fence. The project takes about an hour or less to do. By using the fence panel as a gate, the entire area will look completely fenced in and will match. The gate is easy to use and is not as heavy as some would think. Make a fence gate that looks just like it belongs there.

How to Make a Fence Gate

  1. Step 1

Making a fence gate out of the same fencing material that the fence is constructed of requires leaving an opening in the fence where the gate will be located. The two posts connecting the rest of the fence needs to have half of the width of the post for the gate just as if another section was being erected.

  2. Step 2

Cut a fence panel down to the size of the opening, minus one inch. The hinges will take an inch of space on the fence post. When the hinges are wider, make the cut to fit the size of the hinge.

  3. Step 3

Attach the hinge to the post. Make sure to have the hinge right at the edge of the post so the gate will open and close without any interference from the post

  4. Step 4

Attach the hinge to the fence panel that will work as the gate. The hinge will be set close to the edge of the support boards that hold the fence boards

  5. Step 5

The latch will be placed on the opposite side. The latch could be a turn style or a flip latch style. Attach the latch to the door and the other side to the fence post. Read the directions that come with the latch as to how to mount it. Every latch is different.

Tips & Warnings
  • Making the gate and attaching it works the best with two people.
  • Make sure the fence posts are secure before adding the gate.
  • Do not allow the gate to swing in the wind or it will wiggle the post loose.
