Many do-it-yourself (DIY) projects can be confusing for less-than-handy homeowners. Follow these steps to make the sometimes-tricky process of installing a kitchen sink drain less involved and easier to understand.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • item list
  • (2) sink basket strainers
  • (1) drain kit
  • includes:
  • tail pieces
  • extension pieces
  • trap adapter (optional)
  • p-trap
  • (1) pair of channel lock pliers
  • (1) container of plumbers putty
  • (1) small bucket

  1. Step 1
Starting with the p-trap unscrew all drain pipe nuts

Start by removing the old drain parts. You can do this by starting with the p-trap using the channel lock pliers. Place a small bucket under the p-trap to catch any water that may spill when you remove the p-trap from the pipe. If you have a dishwasher, be sure to disconnect the hose attached to the drain. Simply loosen the nut on the clamp holding the hose in place. Continue unscrewing the remaining nuts on the drain pipes using the channel lock pliers.

  2. Step 2
Remove old basket from the sink

Again, using the channel locks, remove the old basket from the sink by loosening the nut on the bottom of the sink. Pull the old basket strainer through the hole and remove any old putty from the sink.

  3. Step 3
Install new basket in the sink

Before placing basket through the hole of the sink, apply some plumber's putty around the underside lip of the basket. Pull the basket through the hole and then screw the nuts in place to tighten the basket to sink, flattening the putty in place to create a seal. Some of the putty may ooze into the sink. If this happens, just wipe it away.

  4. Step 4
Install new parts same as old parts were removed

Tighten new parts in place in the same way the old parts were removed.

  5. Step 5
Make sure everything is connected and snug

Be sure to remember to reconnect the dishwasher hose back into place before using the sink or dishwasher. Make sure that all connections are snug. Do not over-tighten as this may cause a leak. Also remember that connections should be snug, but with a very small degree of looseness to them.
