How to Enjoy a Date Night With Your Partner
In the midst of our busy lives, it can be difficult to manage a full conversation with your partner. You can get the basics covered — bills, children's health, upcoming plans — but it's hard to have an in-depth conversation. Plan a date night to keep connected with your partner.

1
Set up a regular night. This way, you always know that Thursdays, for example, are the night you and your partner have together. Hire a sitter for that night on a regular basis if you have children.
-
2
Define this time as time with your partner. Avoid using it as time to run errands or see a movie. You want to engage in conversation, not use the time to get things done. Movies are great fodder for later conversation, but it's an expensive night if you pay a sitter so you can sit with your partner for 2 hours in the movie house.

Set some ground rules. Some couples make it out of bounds to talk about the kids on date night. Others agree that they won't talk about work. Some prefer to make the date nights a night to focus on what's happening in the world. Find what works for you and agree on the rules together.

4
Respect your budget. Don't plan a fabulous meal out every week. Get a frozen yogurt and go for a walk along the local trail, or try the local taqueria. Use the time to talk and catch up, not necessarily to paint the town red.
-
5
Talk about what you want to do in advance. There's nothing worse than having totally different expectations of the night. If you have something you need to discuss, make sure you let your partner know beforehand. If you want to try the new Thai place down the street, talk to your partner first. She may not be up to talking about that topic this week, or perhaps she had Thai food for lunch. Make sure you agree from the beginning on what you're doing with your time together.

Commit to having a good time. Your outlook on the night will dictate how much fun you have. If you're looking forward to the evening and are fully engaged with your partner, your date night will be a terrific success.
