Creating a space to hang clothing in a room with no closet is a simple project. Closet bar supports make it possible for you to put a shelf on top. This allows you to have a ready-made “closet” without much work. Because this arrangement will bear a heavy load of clothing, you need to attach both supports to the wall where there are studs underneath. This means your closet will be at least 16 inches long.
Things You'll Need
- Stud finder
- 2 heavy-duty shelf and rod supports
- Closet pole
Locate two studs in the area of the room where you want to hang the closet rack. Mark the studs.
Attach both of the shelf supports to the shelf, securing them with screws.
Place the closet brackets and shelf. Hold the shelf and supports up to the area where you want to hang the closet rack. Place the level on top of the shelf. Hold the shelf up to the wall and level it. Draw a line along the back of the shelf as a placement marker. Mark the holes for the shelf brackets.
Drill holes at the marks to align with the holes in the shelf brackets.
Put the shelf back up on the wall, lining it up with your level mark. Insert screws into the holes for the shelf brackets.
Place the closet pole into the bracket holders.
Tips & Warnings
- If you plan on having the closet hanger span three studs, you should use three brackets, placing one on the middle stud.
