How to Hang a Homemade Headboard

Mounting a headboard to the wall can open up a few extra inches in your bedroom that are otherwise wasted space behind the headboard. Wall mounting the headboard is also an excellent way to give your bedroom a custom-built look and feel with just a few screws. There is no limit to what you can use as a headboard; however, you will need to be able to attach mounting hardware to the back. Sturdy wall mounting brackets securely hold the headboard by sliding into one another.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Laser level
  • Helper
  • Drill with bits
  • Wall mounting brackets
  • Decide where you want the top of the headboard to be. Average is 2 feet above the top of the mattress.

  • Make a mark at the top of the headboard on the wall.

  • Measure down from the mark 12 inches and use the laser level to project a level line across the wall. Ask your helper to hold the level.

  • Measure across the line and make a mark every 12 to 16 inches for the entire width of the headboard, depending on how heavy the headboard is.

  • Center a wall bracket over the first mark and use the pencil to indicate the location of each screw hole. Repeat for each bracket.

  • Flip the headboard over and measure down on the backside 12 inches from the top edge.

  • Project a level line across the headboard and measure and mark every 12 to 16 inches (use the same measurement you used on the wall brackets) along the headboard.

  • Center the other half of the wall mount bracket over the first measurement on the backside of the headboard and indicate with the pencil the location of each screw hole.

  • Drill a pilot hole at each pencil mark on the wall and on the headboard.

  • Line a bracket up with the pilot holes and attach to the wall with screws. Repeat for each wall bracket and with the other halves of the brackets on the backside of the headboard.
