How Does a Fireplace Insert Work?
  1. Insert Installed In Fireplace

    • A fireplace insert is actually placed inside an existing fireplace. Old models were simply set in the fireplace without being connected to the chimney, which caused some lighting and smoke problems. Newer models include piping that runs the length of the existing chimney, connecting the insert directly to the outdoors. This provides proper air flow and increases the safety by reducing places where ash and creosote can collect.

    Air Forced Into Room

    • The primary reason most fireplace inserts are installed is to increase efficiency. Fireplace inserts do this in two main ways: by forcing heat into the room rather than letting it be absorbed into the masonry or the chimney, and by increasing temperature while reducing the combustion rate. The increased temperature and lower combustion rate means that less fuel creates more heat. Heat is forced into the room mainly through strategically placed vents and fans.

    Temperature Control

    • Many fireplace inserts include automatic thermostats. These thermostats do not control the temperature or rate that the fuel is burned; they control how much heat is pushed into the room by the vents or fans. Unlike other heating sources, and even some wood stoves linked to ventilation systems, fireplace inserts will only heat the portion of a home where the vents and fans can force the heated air.
