Aluminum gutters are used to direct water away from rooftops. The water is directed away from buildings to prevent erosion and flooding at ground level. Aluminum is one of the most commonly used materials for gutters. It is cheaper to buy than other alternatives but it has a relatively shorter life expectancy.
Aluminum gutters have a life expectancy between 20 and 25 years. Although they are particularly resistant to corrosion, they are not as hard-wearing as other materials, such as copper. One of the biggest problems associated with aluminum gutters is caulking erosion. Caulking should be inspected and renewed every three years to extend the life expectancy of aluminum gutters.
Although aluminum gutters are preferred for their low levels of maintenance, they have a tendency to dent fairly easily. Routine maintenance work, such as window cleaning or the replacement of roof tiles, will often see ladders propped against aluminum gutters. As the number of dents accumulates, the integrity of the gutters is compromised and they eventually require replacement.
The life expectancy of aluminum gutters can be increased if a seamless version is purchased. Seamless aluminum gutters require less maintenance, have less caulking and are generally easy to install. Compared to staged gutters, seamless alternatives can last up to 30 years. Considerate treatment of staged aluminum gutters also helps extend life expectancy.
